The SR1 College Preparatory & STEM Academy community extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Elayne Hayes Anthony, former Interim President of Jackson State University. Dr. Anthony was a trailblazer whose groundbreaking career broke barriers in journalism and education. She became the first African American woman to serve as an anchor, producer, and reporter at WJTV Channel 12 in Jackson, Mississippi, and later became the first Black woman and journalism educator to serve as President of the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters. She also served as President of the SR1 CPSA Board of Education, where her leadership and vision left an indelible mark on our school community. At the time of her passing, Dr. Anthony served as Chair of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Jackson State University. She was the founding head of the Department of Communication at Belhaven University and previously served as Assistant Superintendent of Public Information and Staff Development for Jackson Public Schools. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dr. Anthony’s mentorship and support profoundly impacted our Vanguard Scholars. Her dedication to creating opportunities, sharing wisdom, and inspiring students will not be forgotten. As we honor her life and legacy, SR1 CPSA will continue to build upon the strong foundation she helped establish. The process to identify and appoint the next Board President will be announced soon. We honor Dr. Hayes Anthony’s legacy and extend our heartfelt prayers to her husband, son, and grandson during this time of loss.
