SR1 Agriculture and Food Science Department Grows Over 300 Watermelons for Students

The SR1 Agriculture and Food Science Department has proudly grown over 300 watermelons on its Agriculture Research Farm north of Canton, Mississippi, located on the future campus of SR1 College Preparatory and STEM Academy (CPSA). 

These watermelons were cultivated to provide organic, healthy fruit for our students. After the watermelons were harvested and delivered to the school, fresh snacks were carefully

prepared by Chef Rachel Goodridge, SR1’s culinary leader, ensuring that scholars enjoyed not only a sweet taste of summer but also the benefits of clean and nutritious food.

This harvest represents the first of many fresh, organic, and specialty produce offerings that SR1 will provide to support students’ health and learning.

Why Health Matters for Mississippi Students

  • Mississippi continues to face some of the highest rates of childhood obesity and diabetes in the United States. Studies show that nearly 40% of children in the state are overweight or obese, conditions that directly affect academic performance, self-esteem, and long-term health.

  • Access to fresh fruits and vegetables can help reduce risks of obesity, improve energy levels, and promote better focus in the classroom. Schools that incorporate healthy snacks and meals see measurable improvements in attendance, test scores, and student behavior.

The Health Benefits of Watermelon

Watermelon is more than a refreshing treat—it is a nutrient-rich fruit that supports growth and wellness:

  • Hydration: Watermelon is over 90% water, helping students stay hydrated throughout the day.

  • Vitamins & Minerals: It provides vitamins A, B6, and C, as well as potassium and magnesium, which are essential for immune function and healthy development.

  • Antioxidants: Rich in lycopene and beta-carotene, watermelon supports heart health and protects cells from damage.

  • Digestion & Energy: The natural fiber and natural sugars give students a steady energy boost without processed additives.

A Commitment to Health and Education

Provost Latesha Roby emphasized SR1’s commitment:

“When we grow our own food and feed it directly to our students, we are planting seeds of health, knowledge, and empowerment. This is not just about watermelon—it’s about giving our children the tools to thrive academically and physically.”


The SR1 Agriculture Research Farm is also producing hundreds of pumpkins and collards to harvest. Dates for the harvest are to be determined.

SR1 CPSA is leading the way as Mississippi’s first College Preparatory and STEM-focused charter school, preparing scholars to strengthen communities and inspire the nation.
